Claire, I loved this and am ashamed at the same time. I want to do things differently and yet I feel that the work I do perpetuates the capitalist narrative. It also feels overwhelming to know where to start to make a change.
Hey Lindsey! I have felt similarly. It's hard to detach from that narrative when our entire society is built around it. For me, awareness was the first step.
For a while, I subscribed to the effective altruism way of measuring this. I found it helpful in examining impact, but somewhat limiting and zero sum. I found it healthier to focus on little things, like showing up with kindness for others and prioritizing relationships over work. Looking at all people with compassion and honoring their dignity, vs. thinking of what they can do for me.
One helpful question I periodically ask myself: “How am I complicit in creating the conditions I say I don’t want?” — Jerry Colonna
This is a helpful question for examining my own life *and* societal conditions.
